The First Systematic Integration
of Tarot and Astrology: Etteillas
Correspondences and Divinatory Method

SAMPLE SPREAD

In this section, a real-life Etteilla-style spread is provided to demonstrate this technique, following his guidelines as closely as possible.  The setting for this reading is a Tuesday afternoon in January 22, 2002 in Liz Hazels reading room.  The reader is invited to follow her through this process, which includes an analysis of the resulting horoscope.

The process begins with Step 1, and a question is chosen: How can I best proceed in my work for the next several days and which days will be the most fortunate?  In Step 2, the 12 houses with the zodiacal Trump cards are prepared on the table.  Because the Sun is in Aquarius today, the card attributed to Aquarius (the Strength card) is placed in the first house, with the Pisces card, the Hanged Man, in the 2d; Aries (The Pope) in the 3d; and on through the remainder of the zodiac, to form the 12 houses.

Moving on to Step 3, the remaining 66 cards are shuffled while focusing on the question.  After shuffling, the cards are spread counter-clockwise around the circle, starting with the first house.  This process continues until all of the cards have been placed around the 12 houses.  The complete Tarot spread is shown in Appendix F.

Because this is a question about work, the pile of cards that have fallen into the 6th house are examined.  House topics are provided in Appendix C.  As indicated in Step 4, these 6th-house cards are interpreted as a set of Tarot cards with no reference to astrology: (Card 1) Four of Staves indicates good starts with partnerships and agreements.  (Card 2) Queen of Coins represents the need for tenacity and patience, or a woman who may offer or need assistance.  (Card 3) Seven of Coins shows the need to examine equipment, tools, and time management.  Some items may need to be re-stocked or fixed (this is all too true).  (Card 4) Page of Coins indicates that important messages may be arrivingand indeed, there is an expected order of astrology books from Amazon.com, books that will add to practical skills.  (Card 5) Four of Cups shows that some decisions or activities will be delayed; there is work to be done alone.  There are uncertainties, perhaps emotional waffling about goals, or waiting for other people to arrive at decisions.  (Card 6) Ace of Coins is the final card, showing prosperity and solid beginnings in work efforts.  This is a favorable final note to the six-card series.  As this Ace is also a planetary pip card, it is placed on top of the pile in the 6th house.

Proceeding to Step 5, the locations of the Ace through Ten of Coins in the houses are identified, and noted around the edge of the horoscope form.  Then, going house by house, the planets attributed to the Coin cards are noted in the house spaces within the circle of the horoscope form as shown Appendix G.  This resulting horoscope may now be interpreted to provide additional details and timing information about the question.
